Counting is one of the basic skill for learning math. Teach to count using songs for kids to learn more easily. They don’t have to point to numbers. My kid started to count when she was one and half years old. I had used approaches like rhymes with number, say the number while driving or climbing stairs.
Number recognition is to help kids identify and recognize basic numbers. I started to teach 1 to 10 number recognition when she was two and half years old using simple hands on activities.
Stairs & numbers – Write numbers on flash cards and arrange it in stairs. Ask your kid to throw bean bag on any number and say the number aloud. Repetitive play will help a kid to learn faster.
Ice cream cone – Make flavors of ice cream using construction papers. Ask your kid to paste ice cream cone at the appropriate number and say the number.
Cloth clip number – Make various shapes using construction paper and write the numbers on it. Similarly write down the numbers on cloth clip and ask your kid to clip it with matching number. After some repetitive play encourage your kid to say the number. Usage of cloth clip will also help fine motor skill.
